Niemerg’s Steakhouse: A Lounges, Steakhouses, and Soup Paradise in Effingham, IL

There is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. This very fine establishment has been around since the 70's. We will make an effort when traveling to make a stop. Place is awesome! Update, 7875 view and climbing, better yet stop in to Niemerg's you won't be disappointed.

I don't give 5 stars out often, but this place is worth every one. The food is great. The service is attentive without being bothersome and the prices are more than fair. We went twice. Once for supper and once for breakfast. For supper, I got the fried chicken and my wife got the beef medallions. The fried chicken was some of the best I have ever had. The medallions were tender and cooked perfectly. Both meals came with a salad bar, which was great. For breakfast, I got the #4, which is bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, gravy and toast. I swapped out the toast for a biscuit. The eggs were perfect, the bacon was crispy and abundant and the biscuit was as good as I've ever had. My wife got the Heavy Duty breakfast, which was similar to mine, but pancakes instead of gravy and larger portions of everything. She said it was amazing. The coffee is very mild with no bitterness, which was nice. We will be back.

I have to say the service really saved it for me. The server went out of her way to make me feel welcome and taken care of. Prices were fair as well. The restaurant said something like country fresh, and so I assumed the mashed potatoes were real. They were either box or mixed with box potatoes and not to my liking. I heard certain regions prefer it that way, so I would like to give the benefit of the doubt and say it is my fault for not asking. I did not care for the brown gravy either. The salad was good and decently portioned. The steak was seasoned and cooked to the right temperature- but it really wasn't scored and seared how it should be. It looked rather unappealing (the picture makes it look better than in-person), and the fat was too soft to eat. The main portion was rather good and filling for the price, though. The banana pie with merangie topping was tasty, and I would go back to try all their other options to see which I like the best. I also want to try their caramel milkshake. I took two cookies to go as well, and they are well worth the price...such a delight!

Wasn't sure about whether this place had breakfast. Most of the reviews and photos talk about lunch/dinner, except for 1 mentioned a breakfast buffet. No buffet, but even better, a breakfast menu that has plenty of hearty options like steak, biscuit gravy, pork chops, and pancakes. People always swear by a hash brown casserole but this one definitely loved up to it's hype! Service was friendly and very attentive. Will definitely be back for another breakfast.

I love the food, this restaurant it's great, like mamaw's food. The hash brown casserole has a great flavor. And the country chicken fried steak. Jake was a great waiter. We will be back! Thank you July/ 8/ 2025

Everything was amazing!! And was surprisingly fast giving that it was thanksgiving and there was LOTS of people there!

Excellent diner food with a full salad bar. Clean and friendly. I had meatloaf and mashed potatoes. My wife had a steak that was cooked perfectly. Lots of desserts. I had a wonderful cheesecake. Most of the customers were families taking their elderly parent to dinner. It was pleasant to engage with the diners and the staff. Very nice place.

The food here is good and the portion sIzes are great relative to what you're paying. I had the Firehouse Chicken Sandwich and thought it was good, though I felt that it could be great with some small improvements like a fancier bun. Wasn't a fan of the fries. The pies are amazing. It's worth the trip just to get a slice of pie and a cup of coffee. The staff all seem to enjoy working there and everyone was friendly and animated. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out.
